* While you may be right about the formal Mathematics, that is not how the Euler-Lagrange equations or Lagrangian mechanics is presented usually. The Lagranian is *most definitely* a direct function of x(t) and x'(t) and I challenge you to find a mechanics reference where it is not. * The algorithm you describe is exactly what I have implemented for taking derivatives wrt functions, so I think *everyone* should be satisfied.
