So clearly it needs a smarter criteria. I consider that form to be less simple because of the added constants (pi and sqrt(2)). Plus, sin(x + pi/4) seems obscure. I think in general, a trig function with a multiple of pi shift is less simple than the version without it (we even automatically remove trivial ones in the constructors).
