What if you have a product of two such functions, is cos(x+pi/4)*cos(y+pi/4) more complicated than sin(x)*sin(y)/2 - sin(x)*cos(y)/2 - sin(y)*cos(x)/2 + cos(x)*cos(y)/2?

I'm assuming you wouldn't want that change.
