lots of the external imports don't use import_module(). Some consistently throughout the codebase (e.g., sage, pyglet, psyco -- mostly in mpmath) and some sporadically (e.g., scipy, theano).

Any rhyme or reason to this? If we're going to have the version reporting, it's probably best to pass everything through import_module() unless there is a specific reason not to. That could be another ticket, though, where such changes are substantial.
