Indeed, welcome to the community. As you probably already noticed, the Python scientific community is interesting, because even if people work on different projects, they tend to know each other and help each other out. I am myself have been around many projects besides SymPy (Scipy, NumPy, Cython, IPython, Sage, ....) and it has been a great experience.
