Sorry.  I made the mistake of comparing a simple test program with the real 
program.
There is no difference with or without the compression.

I suspect the much larger real program may have issues with allocating and 
freeing
storage.  This is freepascal, btw.  I know the time consumed is in the HTTP Get
because I put a writeln displaying the time immediately before and after the 
get.

The program has a recursive call to the function that retrieves the html when
a 301/302 redirect is encountered.  There is also extensive use of the RegExpr2
unit.  Lots of other string processing.

Any ideas?
