You know, 17 minutes seems realllly long. It's been a while since I've done these kinds of calculations, and I may very well be getting this wrong, but I'm guesstimating that 872,000 bytes will come over a 56 kbps modem in around 2.5 minutes. That figure alone could change A LOT in this case in *either* direction due to line conditions (noise...), and because the data is so compressible.
BUT it still leaves a large gap to 17 minutes! It doesn't seem possible for even memory swapping to suck up THAT much time.
