I actually called Borland today about this issue; they forwarded me to
CodeGear, who assured me that everything is the same as before... uh-huh...
But, I'm not even sure the guy understood what I was asking! (There was an
interesting set of accents on the phone: first a woman with very heavy Texas
drawl... and then an Americanized Indian accent at CodeGear... The
transition made it even more interesting.)
> CodeGear doesn't have the dedication to keep things like that alive.
Heh... I don't think they had the funds either... (but I wouldn't know about
the news feed, that's one of the first things I turn off <g>!) I had to keep
reminding myself that CodeGear/ Inprise/ Borland / Name-of-the-month /
NewOrg is nowhere near the barbarian's organization we grew to love and
trust many years ago. It's completely different: different people running a
different sort of company in a radically different market, etc... I don't
like it at all, but I can understand at least parts of the progression.
HOWEVER, I've never violated the terms of my software licenses and I'd be
*really* pissed off if they violate their end. I've got D7 Ent. and K3 Ent.
and a LARGE investment in that code base.
Nearly every time I consider this issue, the thought occurs to me that
people were stealing these things all the time back then; there were web
sites ("crack" sites?) set up with "valid" license codes and whatever else
was needed to get things running. There ought to be a way that valid license
holders could do the same thing (heck, with their own valid license
numbers!), should everything else fail. But I've got no idea what the "phone
home" part of the installation/registration process did.
Additionally, I thought it would be prudent to put a packet sniffer on the
line at any future installation to at least capture the
installation/registration streams for any possible future analysis---no
matter how hard-to-impossible that analysis may be.
> If it tanks I'll never consider buying anything from them again - for any
reason.
As things stand now for me, it seems very unlikely they'll offer something
I'm interested in.
After all, with D7, K3, Synapse, and a few other libs, what else do we
need?! <G>
