To throw in 2 cents.. First of all, its 'only' a compiler and IDE. They are good ones, but there are alternatives, not in the last place freepascal that gets pretty grown up, and is (with compiler directives) pretty much delphi compatible, maybe even more compatible with delphi than the 2-3-4-5-6-7 series themselves, and gnu pascal, and a small number of commercial pascal compilers. So, maybe with some additional work, but (y)our codebase is not lost forever, it is still compilable. The 2nd cent is: my current version of delphi7 is an 'academic' version, obtained from local university when i was employed there. Granted, officialy i cant distribute binaries compiled with that one. This version once registered me, then few weeks later this registration was expired (/dont ask me how), and new installs, on new computers, with valid account at borlands, would not ever let me register it. However, the ide/compiler is running just fine, 100%. So, this was not a cracked distro, but an official release from borland/codegear, academic version. It doesnt care about registration, it just works. At least for me this means as much as that i won't loose the ability to compile, even with no 'phone-home'. Windows only that is (...) As last cent, with newest releases of delphi going further away from the traditional pascal, with this .net stuff taking a more and more central place - whereas i target platform-independant code as much as possible, i really don't care anymore what latest and possibly future version(s) of delphi brings, i'm probably going freepascal sooner or later anycase.. Thanks for bringing this issue to my attention though :)) René ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by the 2008 JavaOne(SM) Conference Don't miss this year's exciting event.
