To be perfectly honest, if the cash drawer opens when asked, that
would be fine for my application.

I was hoping to add a little red warning dialog to indicate that the
cash drawer was open, but I'm not too concerned.

I would imagine that the lower end of the market would try to
incorporate some kind of compatibility to make sure that they get
sales; implementing some kind of simple 2 way conversation doesn't
seem (to me at least) the most difficult thing to implement...
