I did some more analysis of my problem (see my last mail about IPv6).
Apparently the problem is that the host resolution for IPv4 is failing
randomly (it works most of the time) and returning a "host not found"
error. My log file look likes this:

12:32:27: DoStatus: 1 jonbeddoes.com:80
12:32:27: DoStatus: 1 jonbeddoes.com:80
12:32:27: DoStatus: 1 jonbeddoes.com:80
12:32:27: DoStatus: 13 1,Host not found
12:32:27: DoStatus: 13 1,Host not found
12:32:27: DoStatus: 10 65536
12:32:27: DoStatus: 13 1,Host not found
12:32:27: 8| ERROR on socked 1,Host not found
12:32:27: 11| ERROR on socked 1,Host not found

So the first question is, why am I getting this error? Could this
simply be due to a slow DNS server? If so, is there some way to
increase the timeout?

Also, since I am resolving the same host every time, wouldn't make
sense for Synapse to cache the host -> IP mappings so it doesn't have
to hit the DNS server every time? Or should this be cached by the
operating system?

Any help you be much appreciated,
Matt
