Has there been a discussion of how much if any we'd be willing to change
non-Sync parts of the Firefox UX if such tweaks helped simplify the design
constraints?

In particular, I believe we've known forever that we have some extreme users
whose existing datasets would break many simple models. Are we willing to tell
them, e.g. "You have an unusually large # of bookmarks -- in order to be fast,
Sync only syncs the last 1000 bookmarks." and just roll with that? Or even
introduce a notion of bookmark aging, so that 3 year old bookmarks that have
never been used could get "forgotten". Or...

ISTM that if we can make these kinds of 80/20 decisions that affect a small %
of users (and do it smart, so that there is no catastrophic impact), then
things get simpler.
