I think the idea is to make Firefox Account setup part of a
firstrun experience. And it is optional.
There's also the argument that if we think there's value in having an
account -- and I assume we do -- we should encourage users to set one
up (or log in and reap the benefits).
Piling on here, there's huge value in a Firefox Account which lets us
have a relationship with our customers. Even if that customer doesn't
want to use Sync (yet) and might not intend to use multiple devices.

Yes. We're probably all in violent agreement on this. I definitely
share your enthusiasm for establishing this connection with our users.
The question I think we need to answer is whether or not we think we
need this for v1 or could we slip it out a release or two? We release
pretty often so I'm inclined to push non-critical features out 6 to 12
weeks if that buys us time to market or higher confidence/quality of the
features we must have in v1.
