In my opinion, it's absolute unacceptable and not understandable, given
the recent past's many privacy scandals, that Firefox is forcing users
to upgrade to a system which effectively makes using the Mozilla
    infrastructure mandatory.

As Richard points out, this just isn't true. There's nothing hidden
about the FxA stack; you've been able to self-host Desktop since about
Firefox 33, and Android since about Firefox 35.

What's more, the very blog post that you link to that explains the planed transition process, explicitly calls this out in its FAQ:

  Q: Can I self-host the new system?

A: Yes, [followed by links to the documentation].

Is it *harder* to self-host the new system? Yes, I will be the first to admit. But we've been making slow-but-steady progress on that front as interested parties try, reach out for help when they get stuck, and contribute docs and fixes back to the project.

Given unlimited time and resources, I would love to see a slick packaged one-click-installable self-hosting setup for sync. Sadly we do not have either of those luxuries. But I will (and have been!) gladly work with people interested in improving the process.

It's not clear what your criteria would be for "functioning support for self-hosters", but as I said in the linked blog post, we welcome feedback and contributions on making self-hosting easier.
