I worked with Sam to make sure the validator existed in the first place. It's good to see it gaining additional acceptance.
We've avoided using it programmatically because of the load we'd be putting upon it. That and how it handles outright errors versus warnings and how those may or may not be clear signs of defect make it a little problematic for using as an automatic process. Feeds with errors are often due to any number of factors, sometimes it's a simple mistake with character encoding, other times it's a clearly defective framework being used to publish the whole feed. Just turning the poller loose on the feeds and letting it automatically force the feeds into a given state is not without problems. But yes, now that they're moving toward wider use of the validator it may well be worth looking into using it differently. -Bill Kearney Syndic8.com ----- Original Message ----- > The W3C is now hosting a feed validator based on the > well-known one authored by Mark Pilgrim and Sam Ruby. > What makes this one stand out and why might it interest > the Syndic8 group? > > Because it includes a SOAP API which can be used to > automate the validating of feeds, allowing the system to > weed out crap channels before humans step in to > review and approve them. ------------------------ Yahoo!
