Yes, I have amd64. Hmm, the downloadable source packages seem to be bit old...

I checked out the  latest from SVN and spent many frustrating hours trying to
get it work:
- Tried to compile with "./configure --enable-optimisation=0" like instructed in
the FAQ -> No icons, can't draw anything.
- Noticed that it should actually be "./configure --enable-optimization=0" with
z to turn the optimization to 0. Recompiled -> Still no icons, can't draw
anything.
- Noticed that the icons are there in "/usr/share/pixmaps", but synfigstudio
tries to load them from "/pixmaps" for some reason. Linked "/pixmaps" to point
to "/usr/share/pixmaps" -> Icons work!! But still can't draw anyhting...
