A few days ago I asked Marten about CD audio drivers/players for System 6. He directed me to <http://homepage.mac.com/retrofuturist/retromac.html>, which has the drivers (ISO, High Sierra, etc.) available for direct download, but not a player. The page suggested the RapidCD control panel, which I could not find anywhere for purchase or download.
In frustration, I went to Apple's ftp site (basically looking for more frustration). I remebered seeing the PowerCD software before and downloading it, but I figured it was only for that specific hardware and never tried it. Low and behold it works! (IIci, AppleCD 600c, system 6.0.8, custom install (no QuickTime)). Sort of. ConfigPPP (2.0.1) is not happy at all anymore. The Finder gives me a "ConfigPPP: Insufficient memory!" error at startup. This happens in MultiFinder as well. Reselecting PPP in the MacTCP control panel allows me to connect, and running MultiFinder everything works (running under the Finder while playing an audio CD and checking mail causes a hang). I tried increasing the memory given to Finder/Mulitfinder. Nope. Do I need to increase the amount of memory used by the System (the heap? what the hell is the heap?)? I remember seeing an init or cdev that could do this. If anyone has reccomendations I would really appriciate it.
