I've had the same experiences as you with System 6 and a browser. That
4MB RAM limit is the fly in the ointment. An external drive makes the
experience a little easier, but no more modern browser, i.e. Netscape 1.1N,
3.0x or best, the Internet Explorer 2.1, will do well in what's left of 4MB
of RAM when you upgrade, as you must, the Operating System to, say, 7.1 or
better. The Plus will do 7.5.3, but it wheezes.

Interestingly, when I tried to close windows in the System 6 browser, I got
crashes every time.

So, I see surfing as limited to text-only browsers unless you put System 7
on the removeable and either of the aforementioned browsers will do well in
2.xMB.
