I've been off this list for a while because, although I was interested in Sys 6, I really wasn't using it for anything. I had surgery recently and have some down time to play a little. Please forgive the lengthy exposition. This is the sum total of where I am currently.
I dusted off my $1 eBay Mac Plus and external floppy drive, made a PRAM battery for it out of three AAA alkaline cells and then visited Mr. Garrison's e-mailing site. I made up two 800K floppies identical to what he described, plugged in a Global Village Teleport II that I got free (it was being tossed) and after waiting a few seconds for the plus to boot, I configured the panels and Eudora and then e-mailed my wife at work. A few minutes later, I got a reply and did considerable chuckling to myself. The ISP I use for my Macs said they didn't support any system below 7.6. and 68K Macs probably wouldn't work well. My other internet appliance is a PPC upgraded Quadra 950. Ok, now I was inspired. I read Jag's dissertation but decided the whole ZTerm/Lynx thing with key strokes looked to be more complicated than I wanted. Besides I have 4 whole megs and two floppies. I made up a third floppy with MacWWW 1.03 and re-connected. I opened MacWWW, typed in http://www.lowendmac.com/ and after an eternity, I got an alert saying I needed to select a printer with the Chooser. I clicked the "ok" button and the text from the LEM home page appeared. Cool! I tried clicking on one of the underlined links. Again, after the wait the printing alert appeared and after being dismissed the new page appeared over the old one. If I had been thinking 4 MB, instead of the 128 on my Quad, I would have closed the Previous window. I then tried going to Google and found out I couldn't use it. The fourth page I opened over the others, caused a crash with an addressing error but allowed me to restart with a click, losing the connection, of course. My questions are these: What are my best options for surfing and searching using Sys 6, two floppies and a Plus with 4 megs. Assuming (a lot) that my ISP is Lynx capable, Is ZTerm the best way? What are my best options using the same Plus and an Emhan 44 mb ejectable drive. I realize I can go to Sys 7 and use RAM enhancers with this but I'm intent on understanding the boundaries of Sys 6 at this point. The Global Village modem seems to work. Is there any point in entering the init string? That entry is currently blank.
