I am using the same setup to connect a Mac Plus to my linux server. First, make sure you are using MacTCP 1.1.1 as I don't think later versions will work. Secondly, which icon are you choosing when you click on MacTCP? It should be Ethernet Built-In, not EtherTalk (A). Mine crashed just like yours did when I chose the wrong one.
