DSL and cable routers appeared on the market to solve several problems with how we access the Internet. How we access the internet undergoes a process of continual change, so our needs are clearly changing. As an example: security was much less of an issue two years ago. Four years ago, the need for such routers barely existed. Who knows what we will desire two years from now. Even though I am suggesting changes on the order of 24 months here, it takes time to develop new products and competitive features. Unix is much more mature, so what changes tends to be around the edges. >From the end user's perspective, networking hasn't changed all that much over the past four years. There are new programs to handle IP-NAT and filtering which I have to learn, but configuring and monitoring the network interface is pretty much the same. If decided to learn about Unix networking today simply to use it as a router, you would find yourself well equipped to filter unwanted content. Having your Unix box serve double duty as an apple share file server would be an extension upon your existing skills. The same goes for adding a SLIP interface, so that you can get you ethernet-less Classic online. Heck, with more generic Unix skills, you can put the TCP/IP-less Apple ][+ online. I hope that elaborates upon my remarks in a manner which is mildly useful to the rest of the list.
