First,
here is the numbers of the runners Conway asking about:
Sebastian Coe 50 occurrences place 115
Steve Ovett 35 occurrences place 35
Said Aouita 63 occurrences place 77
Steve Cram 59 occurrences place 89
+
Morceli 106 occurrences place 37
Gebrselassie 91 occurrences place 43
Komen 87 occurrences place 46
And for the women:
just outside top-10 was Marita Koch with 139 occurrences in place 16
Jarmila Kratochvilova is in place 61 with 65 occurrences
and Irena Szewinska is in place 312 with 18 occurrences!
Marita Koch had a long carrier (1976-1986), but she hade few
top races per season
Jarmila Kratochvilova top seasons was very few with her main season
in 1982-1983 with her most occurrences
and Irena Szewinska very low position could be explained that her
main distance was 400m but only during a few years (1974-1978) with
few races a year.

First I'd like to say excellent work by Peter .. As always .. His site is
extremely informative .. I understand the field eventers being so prominent
on the list as they have the opportunity to set multiple marks in any given
competition .. And I understand the sprinter/hurdlers having the opportunity
to run in multiple events in any given competition .. What I do not
understand is how far down the list the distance runners are .. Especially
given guys like Coe, Ovett, Aouita, Cram and others who also had the ability
to run multiple races - 800 / 1500 / mile / 1000 / 2000 / 5000 ... Was also
surprised NOT to see Koch, Kratochvilova, or Szewinska in the top 10 on the
women's side .. Anyone out there have an answer for the distance runners ??
And Peter might you have an answer on Koch, Kratochvilova, and Szewinska
???
