Ritz went out in 4:18 this year in his 8:47m race. Reportedly to get ready
for going out very hard against the Kenyans. I think had they both run
here, they would have had a better shot at sustaining that 4:19 pace for
another full mile.
Too bad he opted out of this meet ... as it would have been the best chance
from 1970-2030 that we will have for a HS guy to crack that 8:40.00 in a
HS-only race.
Most have little doubt that in an open race, Webb or Ritz would be right
around 8:38-8:42.
Three HS'ers have gone fester ... but I believe you are right, they were in
open races. I am not sure about Merrick's 8:43 though. Nelson and Lindgren
were in open races I believe.

I saw the race. Webb went out from the gun, controlled
the entire race. Brannen went with him for the first 6
laps or so. Webb's mile split was 4:19.8 by my watch.
He was really pushing hard. The track has tight turns,
and the lanes are narrow (42" at best). It is not banked.
Webb ran a great race - his last lap was just under 32, so
he had a kick, but not a substantial one. I believe his
time is the best 2 mile ever in a high school only race.
