If you want to train to run good times over 1500 -10000m but never win major races do the following. 1. Do lots of long slow distance training.160km a week plus. 2. Race almost all year in anything similar to your event. Juxst think maybe 8 weeks ahead at any time. XC, Indoor , Track , Road etc. 3. Ignore Sprint Training ideas like mid torso strength , speed drills or heavy gym and especially plyometrics. How do they apply to speed endurance anyway? Never hang out with sprinters they are lazy prima donnas anyway. Running fast will hurt you ...if you are not born with speed donmt think you can ever develop it. Sprinters are freaks! 4. Never run faster than race pace in training. Speedwork is just for sharpening up during the last few weeks of race season. The real work is doing hard AT runs over 10miles. 5. More hard km = better running. More racing and getting tougher = better running, if you lose just try harder at everything. Dont think be an animal. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Some of these things are still valuable but certainly anyone that wants to kick and win races needs to develop strength , power and "ease of speed". Practise kicking in training, have a long term plan. There are many areas where sprint training methods can be valuable for MD and LD athletes. I'll bet that GEb does plyo, fast work at quicker than 25s per 200 AS WELL as lots of fast continuos runs and also super slow easty runs. PLUS he does not race all year. I really think countries away from the most successfful are getting further behind in coaching science even though the Sports Science is improving there are many coaches in developed countries who do not listen. regards Steve Bennett Sydney , Australia www.oztrack.com
