Jones wins twice at Brussels Golden League meet

Marion Jones swept the women’s sprint events Friday at the 2002 Memorial Van
Damme meet in Brussels, Belgium, posting a world-leading time along the way.

Jones, the Olympic champion, won the 100 meters in 10.88 seconds, defeating
2001 World Outdoor Champion Zhanna Pintusevich-Block from the Ukraine, who
finished second in 10.90. Other Americans in the field included fourth-place
finisher Chryste Gaines with a seasonal best 10.94 and Torri Edwards, who
was ninth in 11.28.

With her victory in the 100 meters at Brussels, Jones, along with Hicham El
Guerrouj (M-1,500m), Felix Sanchez (M-400m hurdles) and Ana Guevara (W-400
meters), remain in contention for the IAAF Golden League 50 kilos of gold.
The final Golden League meet of the season is the ISTAF 2002 September 6 in
Berlin.

Jones enjoyed an even larger winning margin in the 200 meters, pulling away
in the final 20 meters to again finish ahead of runner-up Pintusevich-Block.
Jones won the race in a world’s best time this season of 22.11 seconds, with
Pintusevich-Block placing second in 22.24.

In other women’s events, three-time world outdoor champion Gail Devers won
the 100m hurdles in 12.49, edging 2001 world outdoor champion Anjanette
Kirkland, who was second with a seasonal best of 12.62. Jenny Adams was
fifth in 12.81.

In the women’s 400 meters, Jearl Miles-Clark placed third in 50.70 seconds
and Michelle Collins was fifth in 51.04. In the women’s 1,500m, 11-time U.S.
Outdoor champ Regina Jacobs was third in 4:01.06 and Suzy Favor-Hamilton was
fifth in 4:03.01.

Tim Montgomery highlighted the men’s action with a dominant performance in
the 100 meters. The 2001 World Outdoor silver medalist blew away the field
by finishing first in 9.91 seconds, well ahead of runner-up Francis Obikwelu
of Portugal, who finished in 10.01. Jon Drummond was fourth (10.04) and
Maurice Greene was sixth 10.11.

Coby Miller and Darvis Patton led a 1-2 American finish in the 200 meters,
with Miller grabbing the victory in 20.07, and Patton finishing second in
20.12. Other U.S. finishers included Bernard Williams (4th-20:23) and Shawn
Crawford (5th-20.29).
In other men’s events, reigning U.S. Outdoor champion David Krummenacker
finished fourth in the 800 meters in 1:43.92, and Joey Woody placed third in
the 400m hurdles in 48.39. Eric Thomas was fifth in 49.03.

In field event action, 2002 U.S. Outdoor triple jump champion Walter Davis
won his specialty with a best of 17.40 meters/57 feet. Jeff Hartwig was the
runner-up in the men’s pole vault with a clearance of 5.80m/19-0.25.

Browne, Glusac to defend USA 20K Championships

The USA Men's and Women's 20K Championships return to the New Haven Road
Race on Labor Day, Monday, September 2. As the race celebrates its 25th
edition, top American fields including the defending champions Dan Browne
and Milena Glusac and ten past national champions and four Olympians are
expected to compete for U.S. 20K
titles and $26,000 in USA Championship money.

New Haven has hosted the national 20K road championships for ten consecutive
years for the men and two straight years for the women. As a USA
Championship, the New Haven 20K is also part of the USA Running Circuit
(USARC), a USA Track & Field road series.

More than 5,000 participants in the 20K and accompanying 5K and 1/2 mile
children's
runs are expected at the 25th annual Labor Day race, the fourth largest 20K
in the country (2,072 finishers in 2001). The New Haven Road Race is
