And there's quite likely the crux of why Bonds didn't end up as No. 1. I've never met anybody in the business who didn't think him a first-class jerk (and my one brush with him--and his bodyguard--as a fan at a hockey game only bore it out). But that's no reason not to vote for him. Of course the all-time horror story in that regard is what, 1947? Ted Williams wins the Triple Crown and isn't MVP because one BBWA voter who didn't like him didn't vote for him at all as I recall. (I may have the details wrong, but the basic plotline is true.) gh
