(for the avoidance of doubt) the normal UK spelling is "Paraffin".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paraffin sums up the confusion nicely. If you go into (say) an agricultural supplies place in the UK and say "I'd like some paraffin please" they'd think you were asking for what in the US is referred to as Kerosine / Kerosene rather than paraffin wax or any of the other possibilities.
