The reason why I keep mostly using 'trail' here on the mailing list is
that 'path' is more ambiguous as it can mean either highway=path or 'a
path' which makes conversation tricky due to easy misunderstanding.
Of course wikipage would need to explicitly tell what is included to
highway=trail and what not also direct to highway=track, highway=footway
and highway=path (for multi-use cases) properly.
I don't believe that footpath would be less confusing for non-natives but
I guess it might be different for natives. However, I also don't believe
it would be that hard for natives to learn what should not be tagged as
highway=trail even if something is called '* trail' in the natural
language. How common those 'wagon trails' or whatever '* trails'
non-trails even are on the ground (so that they need to be mapped in
the first place :-))?
