Platform screen doors (PSDs)
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_screen_doors) are series of
ceiling-height glass doors on the edges of rail platforms, usually in
underground stations, which open and close with the doors of the train
carriages. They separate the platform edge from the track and usually
the tunnel, usually to prevent passengers from falling in and to lower
ventilation costs.

Automatic platform gates (APGs, also known as "half-height platform
screen doors") (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_platform_gates)
are similar, the only differences being that they are usually shorter
(about 1–2 metres / 4–7 feet tall) and are usually installed in
above-ground stations.

Both of these are common in metro systems in East Asia and parts of
Europe, but are generally absent from most other places due to the age
of infrastructure.
