Thx for your suggestions guys.
I will study the URL rewrite alternative.  Session variables are indeed a
good way to avoid parameters, in particular the ones that are passed
frequently in various pages.

or perhaps use URL rewrite, e.g. http://tuckey.org/urlrewrite/ ?
