I understand that. The goal of this is simply to be able to make color / configuration changes for things like gnome-terminal, and have them persist. The existing color scheme is harsh on the laptop I use.
Perhaps the answer will simply be "make a persistent shell script that reconfigures stuff after boot" - or use a terminal app that is not gnome-terminal (rxvt or aterm or the like).
