Hi Liz, You don't need to download the map tiles (and yes I agree it is not user friendly), if you install from svn as per here: http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/gpsdrive/index.php?title=8.04_manual It then runs mapnik to generate the maps on the fly.
