I'm delighted with the replies to my plea for help. The replies lead me to ask two more questions:
1. Where is there a tutorial/howto/whatever for Navit. For me it comes up with a blank screen ... and no maps. I did attempt to download some maps for SE Australia ... so, how do I proceed from this point?? 2. At least two people suggested that an eeepc 701 would make a great GPS using Navit. I'd love to find a howto for this because I have one sitting on my desk ... and I could do a simple PS to run it off the car electrics. Mine is the 4 meg model ... currently running easy-peasy.
