some (few) people use the key "short_name" for this http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:short_name http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/short_name another idea would be to have a list of common abbreviations (i.e. also for all given names) for all languages. This could be used in these cross checks but also for rendering in situations with little space.
