IIRC Richard (Fairhust) placed a paragraph about St vs Saint on the wiki
years ago, saying exactly why this should not be done. As an experienced
journalist and editor (not OSM) he obviously has professional knowledge of
the standard usage in British English. I think he also cited reputable
style guides and dictionaries.
