I've been using the public transport scheme with separate relations for each direction for quite a while. It's true it's a bit more work, but one of the advantages is that the confusing roles "forward" and "backward" are *not* necessary in that case.

And keeping in mind that the road network is growing in detail, i.e. mapping of double carriageways, at some point maybe even individual lanes, the benefit of the "simplicity" of single relations is always traded off against the downside of inner complexity.
