Most of the US wouldn't call it 'Whatever Ave'; when spoken, it would be 'Avenue'. Having it expanded makes programs with spoken directions much more accurate.
The only question is what to do about those cases where it's only referred to locally as 'Ave', and the postal service would refuse letters addressed to 'Avenue'.
