a supermarket can sell a lot of stuff that is not food and still remain a supermarket, e.g. the bigger ones might also sell clothing or some consumer electronics (tv, pc). Also a supermarket will have a huge parking in front of it, while a department store will be found in the city center and will have an underground or parking deck.
