Hi,

I'm a new member to the Talk-ZA mailing list. I work in the energy management industry and I currently reside in Pta.
How did I get involved in OSM?
Earlier this year I got a Android smart phone with integrated GPS receiver and being bit of a tech-head I was quite keen to utilize this tool to its full potential. The phone came with Google Maps which was nice, but the fact that it required a data connection didn't appeal to me, I wanted to be able to see my maps even when there is no coverage. So I started searching the Market for a free map/SatNav app that can work with free offline maps. Amongst the mentioned map formats there was OpenStreetMaps and I decided to have a look at it to see how "open" it is and if is any good. At first glance the map of SA seemed quite complete and accurate, I saw that some minor roads and street names were missing, on the whole however it seemed very promising. I investigated further, went to the wiki, etc. and then I realized that OSM is open as in "open source" and that I can contribute to improving the map. After being enlightened to the philosophy behind OSM I was truly hooked and ever since, whenever I travel, I look for opportunities to improve OSM. Hopefully I can make a valuable contribution to the OSM community.
