I know this is not good news, but I think you'll need to slow down the keying. I've seen this happen on old serial connections, but I see it's also possible when any communication channel is overflowed.
Perhaps a better approach is to let it fail...and if it fails for this reason, try it again...if it still fails...slow it down.
