Greetings,
You can think of D("Status") as a variable you can set at will using:
D("Status")="Hello, I shall be your desired status."
Here's some background information:
D("status") is stored for each record for which it is set in the .BDS file.
If you are specifying a .BDS file in your Open command, then when the Open
command is executed a new bds file is created and the Status values are
stored in it. So just like any other DataStation field, if Status has been
set, you could also see what it's value is - that's how a script can skip
over records who's status has been set for example.
In the BDS file, we store the last modified time (down to the second). When
a file is opened with the DataStation, it checks this to see if we have a
new file or not. If so, it will delete any stored status information
automatically from the BDS file - if the file time is the same, the status
information is retained.

Thom
