Reg, by default there is a checkbox on the about:config page just above the I'll be careful button labeled Show this warning next time. Sounds like you unchecked this checkbox at some point. Mark and all My system seems mysteriously to have bypassed the "I'll be careful" button, so the only way I can access about:config is to turn autoload and browse mode off before I type "about:config" whereupon, on pressing enter, I go straight into it, with no button required.
