Indeed that seems to have solved the problem. I was almost sure I had tried that before, but perhaps I was just lured by the prior character after, which is what I had always used before. Thanks for taking me seriously and getting it resolved.

underlying application, first read the current Character.  Then allow
the right arrow to go through to actually move to the character to the

I didn't verify but I do seem to remember that Prior character after
isn't fully implemented with some applications.  But that doesn't matter
in your case as Character Before gives you the same thing but works.
