Larry,

On the iPhone and iPad, as you slide your finger over the on screen
keyboard, Voiceover will say the letters. There are two typing modes. With
the first one, I can't remember what they call it, you tap twice to select
the letter.

With the second, which is the one I use, I think it's called touch typing,
the letter is selected when you lift your finger. No need to double tap the
letter.Voice over says the letter when you locate it, and says it again when
you lift your finger.

I've found that as I have become familiar with where the letters are on the
screen, I don't have to spend as much time hunting for them.

Subject: a question about using touch screens

OK folks, I've been wanting to ask this for a long time. Not having ever
attempted to use a tablet, iPhone or any other touch screen device, I
realize just how stupid this question might sound, but bear with me, OK?

I just want to know how a blind user like myself avoids becoming a hunt
and pecker when trying to type on a touch screen. There obviously can't
be anything like home keys, or a easily recognizable home base for the
fingers, so short of having to buy and use a bluetooth keyboard, how do
you guys who make use of these screens do it?

Please be nice <smile>.

Larry
