I have an OSM account (several, in fact), but no Google account, and do not intend to get one. It is a good idea to "pick up people from where they are", as long as you don't tell interested newcomers that the first thing they need to participate in a mapping party is set up a Google account ;-) Having a Google account will, unless special precautions are taken, erode your privacy vis-a-vis Google more than that of the average user. It is perfectly ok for anyone to make this decision for herself or himself ("I'll trade some privacy in for this great E-Mail application"). However care should be taken not to push people into something they might not be comfortable with or the consequences of which they don't fully realise. Making the assumption that "almost everybody has a Google account" (often followed by "and if you don't have one you can set one up in a minute") is a first step in that direction.
