So... This thread went on some tangents, but nevertheless, thank you for your feedback. John Firebaugh just posted a new roadmap for the next release of iD [1] and it focuses on the key issues discussed here: relations support and suboptimal performance on Firefox.
Please report any issues you find with iD directly to the issue queue [2]. As always, reproducible bug descriptions and specific feature requests are more than welcome.
