You can use Tapestry 4 with Java 1.4.x, but some things are trickier.
For example, injection doesn't inherit while annotations do.  Makes it
more difficult to have a session-based application unless you like
having all the warnings about getVisit() being deprecated.

As someone who has one foot in 3 and one in 4 - personal opinion - go
with 4. Some things are just plain easier in 4. The only caveat would be
"unless you have a need to stay pre-1.5 Java".
