Hi Raoul, With danger to push our own tools ;-) We use a software tool called MOLGENIS to autogenerate simple web services for SQL databases (and much more, such as a GUI and R interfaces). This may be all you need?
You can download the stuff at http://molgenis.sourceforge.net You can read a story describing combining Taverna and MOLGENIS: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19112082 If you need really complicated queries then you can use MOLGENIS to build such custom services too, but that is a bit more involved.
