Yes, Taverna calls services in parallel and you can configure the number
of allowed concurrent calls of a service - see
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONWqJV_5IAI

Stian has sent details on SCUFL2. David Withers can send details of the
Taverna

The workflows can be saved, reused and shared. For some customized
components, such as beanshells, R and tool services, it is possible to
save the script or tool description. There is currently no mechanism for
sharing such components although work will be done on the BioVeL and
related projects on a component catalogue.

Taverna can do this. See
http://www.mygrid.org.uk/dev/wiki/display/taverna/Nested+workflows

Taverna 2.3 (and previous versions) has a command line tool see
http://www.mygrid.org.uk/dev/wiki/display/taverna/Command+Line+Tool

A prototype of the Taverna 3 command line tool and OSGi platform is
currently being prepared for release. I think the SCUFL2 may go out today.

There is a Ruby Gem for talking to the Taverna 2.2 server and it is
being updated for the Taverna 2.3 server (to simplify the API and also
to add in support for passing across security credentials so that
secured services can be invoked). There are also Java portlets for
talking to the Taverna 2.2 server.

In addition to the Ruby Gem, a jar of the corresponding Java classes is
being created for the Taverna 2.3 server.

There is a VM to try out the Taverna server and the Ruby Gem.

See http://www.taverna.org.uk/download/server/client-side-stuff/

What exactly do you want to configure?

There are a number of plugins for calling services on a grid - see
http://www.taverna.org.uk/documentation/taverna-plugins/taverna-2-x-plugins/

A number of projects use Taverna to invoke services running on a grid
see http://www.taverna.org.uk/introduction/taverna-in-use/

If you have a particular grid in mind, then please ask.

In my opinion, a workflow engine should not be handling large amounts of
data. It is very inefficient and rarely useful. It is better for
references to such data to be passed between services.

Stian is currently preparing the release of SCUFL2.

The Taverna 3 platform that is being prepared is the Taverna 3 engine +
activities and the associated command line tool. It is not a Taverna 3
server nor a Taverna 3 workbench.

The API for submitting workflows to a Taverna 3 server is expected to be
very similar to that for the Taverna 2.3 server.

That is a difficult question to answer quickly. Can you narrow down the
capabilities you want compared?
