AFAIK the following key determines the default mail client:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\(Default)="The Bat!"

Pretty simple. Windows recognizes the extension "MAPIMail", then sends
the file(s) as attachment(s) to the MAPI server.
FYI: There are several such 0-byte files on my system, with the
following extensions:
.CommandLine
.ContentsOnClipboard
.DeskLink
.NameOnClipboard
.OtherFolder
.Send2Lpr
These were created by Microsoft PowerToys and other tools.
